Yard Work, Yard Work, and More Yard Work

Well, we definitely could not have accomplished all of this yard work without Win’s help, so a huge “thank you” to Win for spending his weekend in Charleston.

While our house has many charming features, the landscaping in the front yard is not one of them. In part, this is a result of little to no maintenance to the shrubs and bushes. For the most part, they were just allowed to grow and flourish with wild abandon… which is why the bushes next to the front door nearly took over the living room window (and the window is one of our favorite parts of the house).

So with Win’s help, we pulled out just about all of the bushes from the front yard. And while, we haven’t planted anything in their place yet, it’s still a vast improvement.

For starters, here’s a picture of our house before (notice the odd placement of the two holly bushes on the left side of the house and the overgrown jungle of bushes to the right of the porch):

Daniel and Win jumped right in and started making excellent progress…

There were some serious roots though. The one pictured below had completely wrapped itself in and around the brick. Also, the two main roots to the hollies below the two front windows will have to be pulled out because they are so monstrous.

So with one broken shovel, many sore muscles, and a mound of old bushes, clippings, and weeds, it was a successful weekend.
