Out and About in Charleston: Green Village Tour 8k Run & 5k Walk

Daniel and I will be teaming up with a couple of our neighborhood friends to participate in the Green Village Tour on May 3, a run/walk benefiting the Sustainability Institute (which is located on East Montague).

The run starts at the School of the Arts, winds through the streets of Park Circle, and ends at 10 Storehouse Row in the old Navy Yard. Here’s a bit more on the run/walk (and if you’re interested in joining us, drop me a line):

The Sustainability Institute will be hosting our 2nd Annual TrySports Green Village Tour 8k Race / 5k Walk on May 3rd 2008. The TrySports Green Village Tour winds through North Charleston featuring various projects in the North Charleston area that have undergone environmentally-conscious developments, helping to green the community and revitalize the area. The race will be officially timed on a certified course. This is North Charleston’s only running event and Charleston’s only GREEN race, see below for more details!. This is a family-oriented and dog-friendly event (yes, you can register your dog!). All proceeds will benefit the Sustainability Institute.

For more details about registration, check out the Sustainability Institute’s website here.

About the Sustainability Institute: The Sustainability Institute was founded in 1999 and is a “non-profit organization… work[ing] at the grassroots level to achieve a sustainable South Carolina.”

The institute’s GreenHouse was completed in 2003 and took a typical 1940s-era 2-bedroom home in North Charleston, evaluated its construction and grounds, and developed a plan to renovate and retrofit the house sustainably—adding insulation, sealing its crawl space and installing “green” appliances and systems. picture-001.jpg

The institute offers a variety of workshops, special programs and events to educate individuals and businesses on living and building green: conserving energy, improving air quality, recycling and making daily sustainable choices.

Back when we first moved into our house, Daniel and I went to two of their (free) energy conservation workshops and found them particularly helpful (especially now that we’ve started all of the home improvement projects).
