Out and About in Charleston: Earth Day Festival

The next event for this weekend is Charleston County’s Earth Day Festival at Park Circle on Saturday morning and on into afternoon. We heard about this event at our neighborhood civic club meeting on Monday night, and it sounds like another great way to get involved and not only learn more about our impact on the environment but also meet other people in the community.

This year’s festival will be waste free–everything will either be recycled or composted. With cities like San Francisco that have recycling bins dotting sidewalks like most places have trash cans, Charleston is making a noteworthy effort in becoming more environmentally conscious, and I hope events like this will encourage others to consider their environmental impact when planning their events.

Here is only a sampling of the many festivities. To see more, check out the county’s website:

Free Compost
Free compost will be given out from the Bee’s Ferry Landfill. Top-of-the-line Solar Cone food digester home composters will also be available for a discounted price of $83 plus tax.

Free Reusable Shopping Bags
Free reusable bags to replace disposable grocery bags.
Donate (and Recycle) Your Old Running Shoes
Want to get rid of your old running shoes? Bring them to the Earth Day Festival! TrySports will be collecting old running shoes for recycling and donating them to Samaritans Feet.

Energy Conservation Workshop
Stop wasting money on your energy bills! The Sustainability Institute’s Energy Conservation Workshop at 12:45pm will detail simple, low and no-cost tools and techniques to reduce your energy costs by at least 10%. For most families that is $25 a month! Register now to win a free energy kit, a $60 value to be raffled off at the workshop! To register for the workshop email ben@sustainabilityinstitutesc.org. (As a side note, Daniel and I took this class shortly after we moved into our new and definitely recommend it–besides who doesn’t want to reduce their energy bills?)

Location: Park Circle (E. Montague Avenue) in North Charleston
Date: Saturday, April 19
Time: 11am until 3pm
Cost: Free!
